Dubai, 12 December 2016: The Dubai Film Connection (DFC), the co-production market of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) has awarded six talented Arab filmmakers with USD 50,000 of funding and key partnership opportunities with leading international and regional film industry experts, to help bring their developing projects to life.

Five of the DFC’s most talented filmmakers, including Deema Azar (‘Farha’), Lara Abou Saifan (‘The Great Family’), Hala Alsalman (‘Haifa Street’), Carole Abboud (‘Life = Cinematic Imperfections’) and Khalid Al Mahmood (‘Sunrise’), have also been specially selected to receive exclusive access to the Cannes Film Festival’s Producers Network, one of the world’s most prominent film markets, where a group of the most experienced filmmakers from across the globe connect to share first-hand industry knowledge.

As part of the Dubai Film Market, the DFC is committed to celebrating and nurturing the emerging talent from the Arab world and the future of the flourishing regional film industry. The DFC has already supported the development of more than 130 films which have gone on to achieve global acclaim. This year a variety of awards with generous monetary prizes amounting to USD 50,000 have been provided from prestigious regional organisations as part of the Dubai Film Connection:

• USD 10,000 from Cinescape/Front Row Award
• USD 10,000 from the ART Award
• USD 25,000 from the Dubai International Film Festival
• Euros 5,000 from International Organisation of La Francophonie
• The Tribeca Partnership
• Sørfond Partnership

Shivani Pandya, Managing Director, Dubai International Film Festival said: “Programmes like the Dubai Film Connection support regional industry talent in delivering innovative projects to international audiences which are reflective of the Arab world. Seeing passionate individuals seize these crucial opportunities to bring their work from script to the silver screen brings me great delight as they are not only investing into their own promising futures, but also contributing to the evolution of the regional film industry as a whole.”

The worthy winners of the DFC 2016 have been specially selected based on a range of criteria including quality of ideas, ability to reflect the diversity of filmmaking voices across the Arab world, project feasibility, ability of the production team to deliver the proposed project and the project’s potential for both international and Arab partners.
