I, Tonya
‘I, Tonya’ generated a colossal audience response at the Toronto Film Festival this year. The so-crazy-it’s-true story of American figure skater Tonya Harding, two-time Olympian and Skate America Champion, who in 1994 was banned for the sport for life, after she allegedly aided a rather OTT attempt by her then-husband and bodyguard, to boost her career by violently attacking rival skater, Nancy Kerrigan.

‘I, Tonya’ is a blackly comic account of the chaotic affair, which refuses to skate over the more unpleasant aspects of Harding’s life. The attackers, Harding’s then-partner, the dreadful Jeff Gillooly, and her bodyguard, Shawn Eckhardt are clearly to blame, Tonya’s awareness of the imminent attack is less clear. Nevertheless, despite the grim subject matter, viewers at the film’s Toronto premiere this autumn found plenty to rave about, including the show-stopping lead performance by Australian actress Margot Robbie’s outstanding performance as Tonya as well as the ever-watchable character actor Allison Janney superbly playing Harding’s ghastly mother, in a role that should finally kill off the ghost of CJ Cregg, once and for all. A sure-fire Oscar contender, this is one of the bleakest, darkest – yet funniest films in our program this year.
