Charmøren (The Charmer)
Esmail (Ardalan Esmaili), is a young, handsome Iranian expat living in Copenhagen. Suave, debonair and a something of a ladies man. Or at least, that’s how he would like to appear, as he trawls the bars and clubs of the Danish capital in search of women. But the truth is bleak – Esmail is an Iranian refugee, living in a shelter and desperately seeking a Danish passport. But this is no ‘Green Card’. Rather, this tightly-wound, slow-burning psychological thriller, the feature debut by Danish-based Iranian filmmaker Milas Alami, uses Esmail’s plight as a timely and bleak commentary on the social and cultural challenges facing immigrants – and their hosts – in present-day Scandinavia.
