Visages Villages (Faces Places)
This mellifluous odyssey through the French countryside sees the unlikely pairing of legendary director Agnes Varda with enfant terrible of the graffiti scene, the enigmatic ‘photograffeur’, JR. Together, the duo travel through France in a van, meeting and photographing the country folk and ordinary people they encounter along the way. Creating portraits along the way, the pair form an insight into the depths of the country rarely granted a platform – and the results are compelling and often beautiful. Such was the response of the Cannes 2017 French Writers Society jury, who awarded this film the prestigious Golden Eye, or L’Oeil d’Or award for best documentary across all official selections.
