Nothingwood (The Prince Of Nothingwood)
This documentary about Afghan movie mogul and actor Salim Shaheen is hilarious. The larger-than-life character, who has made over 100 films in his homeland, to great public acclaim, allows filmmaker Sonja Kronlund behind the scenes of his 111th (111th!) shoot for a peek into his bizarre world. And this is the extraordinary result. Shaheen is a flamboyant, passionate man, a cheerfully colossal egomaniac who simply knows and provides what his audience – predominantly Afghan men – want. (Clue: Lots of violence, action and machismo). Yet, in this intimate, endearing portrait, Kronlund manages to make us empathise and grow to like the bumbustious Shaheen, a man firmly convinced of his own splendour.
