Per Un Pugno Di Dollari (A Fistful Of Dollars)
Sergio Leone changed how the big-screen Western would be perceived with this gloriously stylish and violent 1964 cowboy film, itself based on Akira Kurosawa’s acclaimed film YOJIMBO. Shot in Italy, with a budget of reportedly just USD200,000, it saw Clint Eastwood gain big-screen fame for playing the cigar-chomping, poncho-wearing stranger who arrives in a small Mexican border town and manipulates matters for his own financial benefit by playing on a family feud. Eastwood’s slow-talking but fast-shooting anti-hero was a great success with audiences responding to the gun-play and critics appreciating Leone’s strong visual style and Ennio Morricone’s distinctive score. A true Western classic.
