Pyromanen (Pyromaniac)
This beautifully shot Norwegian drama, based on a real life incident, makes the most of its lush wooded locations, as it tells the story of a young arsonist making his own inflammatory plea for attention. A respected local fire chief in isolated Finland helps put out fires with his volunteer force and 19-year-old son Dag (Trond Nilssen). But while Dag is keen to work with his father, it appears he has even more enthusiasm for starting them. Dag’s quiet internalised anger is impressively sustained, with director Erik Skjoldbjærg dwelling as much on psychological themes, as on the tension within this remote community and its resident pyromaniac.
