Mary Shelley
A Gothic delight, the English-language feature debut by Saudi Arabian director Haifaa Al-Mansour (Wadjda), is a richly-textured, elegant tale of the rebellious teenager Mary’s tempestuous romance with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. The pair’s whirlwind passion inspired love, madness, art and poetry and finally, that masterpiece of literature, Mary’s macabre creation ‘Frankenstein’. With stand-out performances by Elle Fanning as hell-raising teen Mary, Douglas Booth as the mad, bad and dangerous-to-know Shelley and Joanne Froggatt as Mary’s ghastly stepmother, this is a solid, satisfying romance.
