A Monster Calls
This elegantly made fantasy drama is a terrific double-act of moving central performances accompanied by stunning imagery and effects. Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona (who made THE IMPOSSIBLE) has crafted a moody and magnificent film, essentially centred around 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall), beaten at school and living with his fastidious grandmother (Sigourney Weaver), while his ill mother is in hospital. From his nightmares springs a bark-skinned ape colossus (boomingly voiced by Liam Neeson), who acts as guardian angel and advisor, as he tries to deal with the dark and raw moments in his young life.
