20th Century Women
A beautifully mannered character drama from writer/director Mike Mills (who made BEGINNERS) set in Santa Barbara of 1979 and focusing on teenager Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann), who lives with his singer mother Dorothea (Annette Bening). Worried that she cannot seem to connect with her son, she enlists help from would-be artists Abbie (Greta Gerwig), who rents a room at their house, and Julie (Elle Fanning), Jamie’s childhood friend who he is in love with, to try and help him figure out what it is to be a man. With delightfully drawn characters and great dialogue, the film is made with a delicate poignancy.
