The Road To Mandalay
Powerfully simple in its storytelling, this moving drama from Midi Z brings the plight of Burmese trying to escape the poverty in their home country into stark light, but is also a rather tender romance. Lianqing (Ke-Xi Wu) makes the complex journey into Thailand, where she meets fellow immigrant Guo (Kai Ko), who seeks her out in Bangkok as they both struggle due to their illegal status. Their tough lives are brought into elegantly clear vision thanks to Midi Z’s sure structure and use of mood, with their stuttering romance offering warmth in a world, where life is cheap and corruption rules.
