Certain Women
Writer/director Kelly Reichardt confirms and consolidates her credentials as one of the great chroniclers of unromanticised moments in the lives of American women (and those they interact with). This adaptation of a series of short stories by Montana native Maile Meloy is elegantly sustained and beautifully performed. The three stories – starring Laura Dern, Michelle Williams (a regular player in Reichardt’s films) and Kristen Stewart – are loosely connected and resolutely low-key in terms of broad drama. And yet, they they are all impressively textured, subtle and strikingly performed as they chart moments from ordinary working lives in the Big Sky Country.
