Učitelka (The Teacher)
Politics and education collide in this powerful and compelling Slovak-language drama (which has its shrewd moments of comedy). Set in Bratislava in the early 1980s just as communism is in its final period, local communist party boss and teacher Comrade Drazdechova (the impressive Zuzana Mauréry) tells her pupils to explain about their parents and then uses her relationship to manipulate them – and the children - for her own devices. It is a shrewdly dark story elegantly told by director-writer pairing of Jan Hřebejk and Petr Jarchovsky, who intelligently use the teacher’s machinations to reflect a complex and dark political period.
