Hissein Habré, Une Tragédie Tchadienne (Hissein Habré, A Chadian Tragedy)
As African despots go, Chad dictator Hissein Habré, who ruled his country with an iron first between 1982 and 1990, is perhaps one of the less well-known, but as Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s harrowing documentary reveals, the victims of his rule are still suffering from those awful years. His secret police - the DSS (Documentation and Security Directorate) - horrifically tortured hundreds of thousands of political prisoners and killed almost 40,000. In this powerful film Haroun (director of GRISGRIS and A SCREAMING MAN) listens compassionately to the often-horrific stories of survivors of the dictatorship.
