There may be a sentimental streak running through Jeff Nichols' delightful new film LOVING, but the real-life story of the 1950s romance between Mildred Jetter (the wonderful Ruth Negga), who is black, and Richard Loving (Joel Edgerton), who is white, is heartfelt and profound. They live in the US state of Virginia, where their marriage is illegal, but when they marry in 1958 in a courthouse across the state line in Washington D.C., they set off on a turbulent and emotional journey of years of legal and social unrest, with their relationship eventually leading to the overturning of laws preventing interracial marriage nationwide.
