Panel discussions to explore cultural and financial aspects of cinema at Dubai Film Fest

Dubai, December 11, 2005 – Elite panel discussions have been organised to explore the cultural and financial aspects of film at the 2nd Dubai International Film Festival 2005 (DIFF). The two panel discussions entitled “Building the Cultural Bridge” and “The Financial Landscape of the Middle East” will be held on December 13, 2005. The discussions will be preceded by a conversation between Colin Brown from Screen International and Hany Abu Assad, noted Palestinian film maker and Director of ‘Paradise Now’, the inaugural gala film at the DIFF. Dr. Amina Al Rustamani will deliver the opening remarks for the discussions that will be held at the Knowledge Village Auditorium and will be open to members of the public. The discussions will feature distinguished international and regional personalities in the areas of film and finance as panel members and as moderators. They will seek to voice insights that Dubai can benefit from while consolidating its role as the region’s film, media and financial centre. Hanna Fisher, Program Controller, Dubai International Film Festival, said: “Leading international film makers, festival curators, film correspondents and financiers will contribute their thoughts and experiences to the discussions. Issues such as addressing intolerance, bridging the chasm of misunderstanding in the world through cinema and innovative ways to finance cinema in the region will be discussed.” “Building the Cultural Bridge” will be moderated by Finn Halligan, International Editor of the well-known film magazine Screen International. The panel members will feature Niv Fichman, Producer, Rhombus Media; Larry Kardish, Senior Curator, MOMA; Irene Bignardi, Correspondent, La Republica and Anant Singh, Producer of Distant Horizons, a DIFF feature. “The Financial Landscape of the Middle East” will be moderated by the multi-talented Eddie O’Sullivan, Editor-in-Chief of the Middle East Economic Digest. Panel members will include Mishal Kanoo, Deputy Chairman of the Kanoo Group and Joe Kawkabani, (designation required), Shuaa Capital. “Building the Cultural Bridge” will begin at 11.30 a.m. and end at 12.30 p.m. “The Financial Landscape of the Middle East” will begin at 1.00 p.m. and end at 2.00 p.m. The conversation with Hany Abu Assad will begin at 10.15 a.m.
