Over 300 films participate in DIFF’s Dubai Film Market for global exposure
Tue Dec 08,2009
The Dubai Film Market, the only state of the art regional platform for trading and distribution of films organised as part of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), will feature more than 300 movie titles from around the world in 2009.
The second edition of Dubai Film Market, an eagerly anticipated industry event that brings leading industry buyers representing various distribution channels, will also feature a new category ‘Dubai Film Connection – Work in Progress.’ This will give potential distributors an opportunity to discover projects nearing completion selected by DIFF in view of reaching a larger global acceptance.
Ziad Yaghi, Director of Dubai Film Market said that the Market is one of the defining components of the film festival, which highlights its commitment to promote the global outreach of movies, especially those produced in the Arab world, Asia and Africa.
“Our responsibility as a facilitator of good cinema does not stop with screening them. We support projects in all stages of production and also serve as the platform for showcasing movies from around the world for viable distribution and trade deals,” he added.
“Dubai Film Market offers unprecedented industry visibility and exposure, and being spotted by potential distributors here can make all the difference for filmmakers,” explained Yaghi.
With DIFF, Gulf Film Festival and Market recommended films on the roster, the Dubai Film Market this year has generated considerable buzz. A host of leading industry companies, such as Arte, Shorts International, Europa Corp., RTBF, Moviemax Italia, Wide Management, Orbit-Showtime, mbc, MTV Lebanon, IRIB, Dubai TV, Shoreline Entertainment, HBO, Orascom TV, Mongrel, SBS Television, Fortissimo amongst many others, are attending the event for interacting and evaluating the films showcased for potential deals.
The Dubai Film Market is driving forward its objectives of maximising buyer-seller interaction through two initiatives – Cinetech and Market Lounge. While the Market Lounge serves as the networking venue for industry professionals, Cinetech is essentially a digital video library that can be accessed by potential distributors, buyers and broadcasters for viewing and direct interaction with filmmakers for acquisitions.
This year, Cinetech goes one step ahead with a brand-new touch-screen technology; Touchsmart PCs provided by HP, Dubai Film Market’s technology partner. Private booths have been facilitated for smooth viewing of the over 300 movies participating in the Dubai Film Market.
Last year, the Dubai Film Market hosted 211 films with representation from global companies and the Market Lounge hosting more than 68 meetings. In all, over 50 deals were secured across various distribution and broadcasting channels.
A dedicated Dubai Film Market Catalogue featuring the full description of the film, contacts of distributors and valuable industry references, are also provided apart from daily reports on most viewed films and individual audience reports on the status of the participating films.
The Dubai Film Market’s main aim is to unite industry executives from all backgrounds and origins, to trade and distribute film content globally. With a commitment to raising the visibility of World Cinema – particularly Arab, Asian and African – the Dubai Film Market also seeks to encourage the acquisition and distribution of films that are showcased at DIFF.
DIFF 2009 is held in association with Dubai Studio City. Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Pearl, Emirates Airline and Madinat Jumeirah are the principal sponsors of DIFF and the event is supported by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture). Full listings of films can be accessed via the DIFF website (www.dubaifilmfest.com) and downloaded on to your mobile phone.
