DIFF 2010 expands to include competition for local filmmaking talent

The seventh edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) to be held from December 12 to 19, 2010, has strengthened its in-competition Muhr Awards with a new category to honour Emirati film talent.

The Muhr Awards for Emirati Filmmakers adds to the existing Muhr Arab and Muhr AsiaAfrica Awards that will continue to honour the finest talent in film making in the Arab world, Africa and Asia.

15 Emirati films including feature, short and documentary will compete for the top honours in the new award segment.  The short-listed films will be vying for the first, second and third prize from any of the three filmmaking categories.

DIFF Artistic Director Masoud Amralla Al Ali said that the addition of the Muhr Awards for Emirati Filmmakers is a testament to the evolution of a strong Emirati filmmaking culture. “One of the founding objectives of the Dubai International Film Festival has been to encourage the development of the Arab and local cinematic talent. And now we are seeing tangible results – in terms of number of UAE film productions and the quality of these movies.”

He added: “The in-competition section of DIFF, the Muhr Awards are presented to the best in cinema-making in the Arab world, Asia and Africa. By creating a distinct category for Emirati Filmmakers, we are offering an added platform for Emirati talent to showcase their skills to a global audience, and also match their skills against international quality parameters.”

At DIFF 2009, 28 Muhr Arab and Muhr AsiaAfrica Awards were distributed for excellence in acting, cinematography, editing, music and scriptwriting in addition to the jury general excellence awards. Over 900 entries were received from more than 62 nations across Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australia and Europe in three categories -documentaries, short films and feature films.

DIFF 2010 is held in association with Dubai Studio City and supported by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Pearl, Emirates Airline and Madinat Jumeirah are the principal sponsors of DIFF.
