DIFF sparks interest at Cannes Film Festival 2005

Sun May 22,2005

Organizers of the Dubai International Film Festival hosted a grand reception in Cannes on May 17, during the world renowned Cannes Film Festival. The objective of the reception was similar to that of the one held by DIFF in Cannes last year: to increase awareness of the DIFF amongst members of the international film community. Held at the Carlton beach on the famous Cannes Croisette, the two hour event saw an attendance of 568 movers and shakers from the industry. Among them were Hollywood studio executives, actors, filmmakers, distributors, producers and directors. Among the notables were Indian director Gurinder Chadha (Bend it like Beckham), major Hollywood producer Anant Singh (Red Dust) and senior officials of various other international film festivals and governments. There were also several key industry members from Dubai and the Gulf region such as Gulf Film, Prime Pictures and Front Row Filmed Entertainment. International press and media present included Colin Brown, Editor in Chief of Screen International and Peter Bart, Editor in Chief of Variety, and other leading entertainment publications. \“Screen International exists to help film makers find and understand their audiences - and to help audiences discover films that entertain, inform and enlighten. So, I am delighted to support the Dubai International Film Festival, which seeks to promote those values and which aspires to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western cultures,\” commented Tim McLoughlin, Publisher of Screen International. Following his welcome note, the Director of DIFF, Neil D. Stephenson invited the audience to view a short video montage showing the highlights of DIFF 2004, which was watched by an attentive audience, boosting levels of interest in Dubai and in the DIFF. Further raising excitement levels among the crowd was a draw held for two business class return air tickets on Emirates Airline to Dubai with a week-long stay at the Madinat Jumeirah during the Dubai International Film Festival to be held from 11–17 December 2005. The prize was presented to its recipient by Morgan Freeman, who attended the DIFF last year, and was an invited guest to the Dubai soiree in Cannes. Organizers said that they were delighted with interest and excitement generated in Cannes about Dubai and its new film festival, and its excellent long term potential. Representatives of DIFF included members of DIFF Steering Committee from Dubai Media City, members of the festival’s international programming team, as well as senior management of Madinat Jumeirah, the official DIFF epicenter.
