Tue Oct 23,2012

Dubai, UAE; October 23rd, 2012: The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) today announced that Academy Award winning actor Colin Firth and his fashion entrepreneur wife Livia will attend the Festival this year to support the annual ‘One Night to Change Lives’ charity event under the patronage of UN Messenger of Peace HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The couple who are Global Ambassadors for Oxfam along with Kristin Davis will be among the many international celebrity attendees including Rooney Mara, Amr Waked and Ali Mostafa at the annual black-tie charity evening on December 14th at the prestigious Armani Hotel in Dubai. All proceeds from the exclusive gala dinner and high-end auction featuring one-of-a-kind prizes donated by celebrity Oxfam partners will go to the UAE-based philanthropic organization Dubai Cares and global development and aid agency, Oxfam.

This is the second year that Colin Firth has attended DIFF, following his visit to promote the multi-award winning, record breaking film, The King’s Speech in 2010. Livia Firth is Oxfam’s newest Global Ambassador, creative director of www.eco-age.com and founder of The Green Carpet Challenge.

Fashion icon and Broadway star Kristin Davis is also attending the event as a Global Ambassador for Oxfam. A long-time supporter of the charity, Kristin has travelled extensively with Oxfam to raise awareness of poverty related issues. This will be the actress’s first time attending DIFF.

Last year, the charitable event raised over USD$1 million through ticket sales and the auctioning of money-can’t-buy prizes. The auction raised money to fund 14 schools in the region in addition to the support of Varkey GEMS Foundation which funded 10 schools in Pakistan. This year the auction comprises of a line-up of once in a lifetime opportunities including a VIP trip to New York to see Scarlett Johansson in the hit musical Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway as well as a meet and greet with the Hollywood superstar.

DIFF Chairman Abdulhamid Juma said: “We are honoured to be involved in this prestigious event for another year, continuing our partnership with Dubai Cares and Oxfam. We also look forward to welcoming our guests to Dubai for what we are sure will be a successful event. Part of the DIFF remit is ‘Bridging Cultures’ so as the Festival grows, it is wonderful to be able to shine a spotlight on these worthy causes and charities whilst making a measurable, tangible difference to our global community.”
Founded in 2007 by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai Cares is working to improve access to quality primary education for children in developing countries. Currently, Dubai Cares’ primary education programs, implemented in partnership with international aid agencies and NGOs, are reaching 7 million children in 28 developing countries. The philanthropic organization expresses the UAE’s commitment to achieve, by 2015, the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (UN MDG) 2 and 3 - namely, to guarantee universal primary education and to promote gender equality, respectively. Dubai Cares is also helping to forge a global partnership for development, as represented by UN MDG 8.

Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Cares, said: “We are pleased to be sharing once again this high profile stage with Oxfam and DIFF, united by a sense of compassion for children around the globe who deserve access to quality primary education and a sense of urgency to help them. We also welcome this opportunity to tell a global audience our story so far – a story that is five years in the making and one that is about transforming the lives of millions of children, their families and their communities.”

Oxfam Chief Executive Barbara Stocking said: “We are delighted to be involved with the Dubai International Film Festival again and to see stars of stage and screen put their might behind Oxfam’s life changing work.”

Oxfam has worked with Dubai Cares since 2008 to improve access and quality education for nearly 63,000 school children in some of the world’s poorest countries including Mali, Niger, and Pakistan.

Oxfam’s Global Ambassadors include A-list actors Colin Firth, Scarlett Johansson, Minnie Driver, Gael Garcia Bernal, Djimon Hounsou, Kristin Davis, Rahul Bose; musicians Coldplay and Annie Lennox; Helena Christensen and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. A number of Oxfam ambassadors are expected to attend the December event.
