The marvel of animation in full bloom at DIFF 2009

Fri Dec 11,2009

Animation and motion capture, the new frontiers in cinema, are in full bloom at the Dubai International Film Festival 2009 showcase. Sharing top-billing was ‘Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel’ which made a gala opening on Friday.

The family and fun excitement is to be followed by the much-heralded ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ tomorrow (4pm, First Group Theatre, December 12) and Disney classic ‘The Princess And The Frog’ (5pm, First Group Theatre, December 14), which is released in the US the same week.

DIFF Director of International Programming Sheila Whitaker said the selection of animation movies at DIFF highlight the evolution of this fast-changing movie technology, which opens doors to new possibilities in narration.

“Digital film making and animation have broken all barriers; film-makers, today, practically have no limitations. But what is truly awe-inspiring is how they use classic tales to create compelling movies using digital techniques,” she added.

In ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, the animation based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, the mean old farmers – fat Boggis, squat Bunce and skinny Bean – have joined forces and have Mr. Fox and his family surrounded, but the cunning carnivore has a fantastic masterplan to save the day. Produced by Regency Enterprises and Indian Paintbrush, the visually stunning movie features a stellar cast of voiceovers, with George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzmann and Bill Murray.

‘The Princess And The Frog’ – directed by Ron Clements and John Musker with Anike Noni Rose, Bruno Campos and Keith David – will also have youngsters in wide-eyed surprise, with the Disney fairytale centering on a young girl, Princess Tiana, who lives in New Orleans’ French Quarter during the Jazz Age.

Following the movie, Bruce Smith will host a Master Class for select UAE university media and art students, explaining how he animated Dr. Facilier, the character he supervised in the Disney film.

Now in its sixth year, DIFF 2009 is held in association with Dubai Studio City and will be held from December 9 to 16. Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Pearl, Emirates Airline and Madinat Jumeirah are the principal sponsors of DIFF and the event is supported by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture).
