Tue Dec 08,2009

The red carpet has been laid out, the big screen is ready and some of the leading stars are here. Dubai is all set to reel out the sixth edition of the Dubai International Film Festival today (December 9, 2009, Wednesday).

The definitive film festival of the region, DIFF will officially open with celebrities in attendance at the Opening Gala of Nine, director Rob Marshall’s newest all-star musical.

Hours before it also screens in Los Angeles, the film starring Daniel Day Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson and Sophia Loren will open for the first time to a global public audience in Dubai.

DIFF Chairman Abdulhamid Juma said the selection of 168 films from 55 countries to be screened over the next eight days confirms the festival’s emergence as the leading festival of the region.

“As a nation, we have always believed in building bridges between civilizations and people, and opening doors for dialogue despite the differences in language or cultural attributes such as music. Like movies, music also brings together people from different cultures. This respect for diversity and the universal language of movies and music is highlighted in our opening film, Nine, and the films to be screened in the coming days.”

The opening gala will be preceded by a celebrity red carpet walk to feature stars from Hollywood, Arab, African & Asian cinema and the Indian film industry. Hollywood celebrities expected are Matt Dillon, Christina Ricci, Mandy Moore, Christopher Lambert, Jason Flemying, Natalie Dormer and Lluis Homar. Recorded messages of Nine stars will be beamed before the screening, adding to the star appeal.

Towering high on the red carpet will be Indian movie legend Amitabh Bachchan, who recieves the DIFF 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award. He will joined by his actor-son Abhishek Bachchan. Other Indian stars to grace the opening are Ranbir Kapoor, award-winning actor Mammootty, artist and director M.F. Hussein, Shimit Amin, Manisha Koirala, Boman Irani, Sameer Dattani, Sonu Sood, Javed Jaffrey and Minissha Lamba.
