Sun Dec 10,2006

The contestants have been shortlisted, the jury has been formed, and now the public will have the benefit of seeing the films that are in the running for the Muhr Awards for Excellence in Arab Cinema, which is in its inaugural year at the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF).

Masoud Amralla Al Ali, the festival’s Artistic Director for Arabic Programming and Coordinator General of the competition, stated: “Competition films are screened daily, and viewers will experience the films along with the judges and in many cases with the filmmakers themselves, so the atmosphere is sure to be highly charged. This will be unlike any other viewing experience at the festival.”

He continued, “the In-Competition films are incredibly diverse: 30 films from every corner of the Arab world, in the categories of shorts, features and documentaries. Guests are sure to find something that will fascinate and move them—-it is a cross-section of the best of Arab cinema today.”

There are 13 jury members, representing a wealth of filmmaking experience from Europe, North America, North Africa, the Levant and the GCC. Jury deliberations are strictly regulated at the festival, and precautions taken to avoid bias in any individual member’s choice.

Winners will be awarded the gold, silver or bronze trophy and over AED 1 million in prize money at a special awards ceremony during DIFF’s closing night festivities at al Sahra Desert Resort on Sunday, December 17. Jury members will also bestow the honor of the UAE Talent Awards to two promising Emirati screenwriters and one overall outstanding Emirati filmmaker.
