Sun Oct 02,2005
Dubai, October 2, 2005: The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), being held this year from December 11-17, is building on the success of its inaugural edition in 2004, with the launch of its apprenticeship scheme for DIFF 2005. Under the newly instituted DIFF Apprenticeship Program, a total of 10 assistants will work under the mentorship of senior festival programmers and administrators. With the promotion of excellence in Arab cinema as one of its key mandates, the DIFF is keen to provide a platform of support to the Arab filmmaking community. The program has thus been designed for UAE nationals and other active young members of the Arab film community. The Chairman of the Festival, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, voiced his approval of this initiative and its benefits saying “I am pleased to see this initiative at our festival. The Dubai International Film Festival is a platform for young Arab and UAE filmmakers to showcase their talent. This new program is a solid step towards building this platform.” DIFF hopes to assist young cineastes and filmmakers to learn more about the running of a large international film festival, while under the direction of experienced industry experts, while also providing networking opportunities for them. In return, the apprentices will provide essential on-the-ground support to their mentors by shadowing them before and during DIFF. “We are very excited about this new program as it provides a very good vehicle for young filmmakers and other aspiring film professionals from the UAE and region to get directly involved in the management of the festival. It is also important that the DIFF is true to its word about providing a beacon of support for Arab cinema. This is one of our flagship objectives and it is important that we back up our words with actions and support the emerging community of Arab filmmakers both in Dubai and in the region,” said Neil Stephenson, CEO of the Dubai International Film Festival. Acting as key liaisons between their mentors and Festival management, the apprentices will help to ensure the smooth implementation of the various festival programs. The individuals selected for the DIFF 2005 Festival Apprenticeship Program are Lamia Gargash, Omar Ibrahim, Mohammed Al Traifi, Maryam Bin Fahad, Hani Al Shaibani, Saeed Al Dhaheri, Iman Al Omrani, Nahla Bin Fahad and Karim Noseir.
