DIFF 2010 opens doors to UAE residents to join Festival team
Sun Sep 19,2010
The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), the leading film festival in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, is throwing open its doors once more to UAE nationals and residents.
The Festival is looking for more than 300 temporary staff to help organize and run the seventh edition of DIFF, to be held from December 12 to 19, 2010. Prospective candidates can explore job opportunities at the DIFF Career Fair from 10 am to 7 pm on Tuesday, September 21, at the Knowledge Village Conference Centre.
Positions are available across Festival departments, with diverse roles in box office and theatre operations to guest relations and hospitality and planning and development at DIFF headquarters. From back-office to front-of-stage, the Career Fair has a job to suit every personality and interest.
Senegalese-American Ibrahim Niang, a jury wrangler during DIFF 2009, attended the Festival for three years before deciding to get more involved.
“The Festival brought something very special to me,” Niang said. “It brought Africa to me through the films, but it also brought a better understanding of the Middle East and much better connections with the people who live in the UAE. Being part of DIFF is a great platform to meet wonderful people from around the world, and I would recommend it for everyone.”
The French teacher, who was in charge of managing jury members for the African shorts and features competitions, described DIFF as one of the hidden treasures of Dubai. “As long as I live in the UAE, I would like to remain a part of DIFF,” he added.
Jordanian Mohammed Azzam was introduced to the DIFF by friends working on the red carpet in its early years. Since joining the Festival as registration supervisor in 2008, he has grown with the Festival and now serves as film liaison for Arab cinema. “I’d always wanted to be part of DIFF, and once I joined I never left,” he said. “It is a lot of pressure, but it’s great to see it come to fruition every year.
Sarah Thorsen, from Denmark, has worked with the DIFF library, the Dubai Film Market and the Gulf Film Festival since joining in April 2009. She is now the Festival registration manager.
“This is the kind of job where you’re excited to get out of bed and come to work every day,” she said. “When you work at DIFF, you’re working towards a significant goal. I feel proud that I’m working for the Festival and for Dubai. The team here is amazing. Every time I’ve taken a break in between, I’ve always wanted to return.”
Mohammed AlHousani, DIFF Human Resources and Volunteers Manager, said that the Career Fair is a central element in DIFF’s community involvement, offering Festival-goers and fans a hands-on opportunity to get involved in the region’s leading film festival and the city’s top cultural event.
“For each of the last several years, volunteers and temporary staff have been directly involved in shaping the Festival and the cultural fabric of our city. Many have returned year after year, highlighting their enduring bond with DIFF. The Career Fair helps DIFF empower local talent and creates a skill base for the growth of our industry,” he said.
All applicants must be over 21 years of age, UAE nationals or legal residents of the UAE. For those who cannot attend the Career Fair, resumes can be submitted to email@example.com. Short-listed candidates will receive in-depth training. The Festival also expects to enrol significant numbers of returning volunteers.
DIFF 2010 is held in association with Dubai Studio City and supported by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Pearl, Emirates Airline and Madinat Jumeirah are the principal sponsors. Registration for DIFF 2010 is now open at www.dubaifilmfest.com.
