For those who decided they’d rather not get red-carpet ready last night yet still wanted to get in on the DIFF action, THE BEACH, opposite JBR, was clearly the place to be.
All the glamour from the Jumeirah Madinat Arena, home to DIFF 2016, was streamed live onto the big screen set up on the sand, watched by an audience laying back on bean bags under the stars.
It was a relaxed atmosphere and a great example of how the medium of film can bring communities together.
Free to attend, this al fresco festival fever will be reeled out every night of DIFF from the 7-14 December.
Showing last night was the premiere of American adventure comedy-drama ‘Burn Your Maps’ written and directed by Jordan Roberts, starring Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) and Jacob Tremblay (Room). This is a quirky adventure following a young American boy, Wes, who is convinced he is born in the wrong place and believes that he is in fact a Mongolian goat herder.
While it garnered all the giggles in the right place, the plot pulled on many a heartstring and saw a few tears being wiped away (no – we all know it wasn’t sand in yer eyes or the breeze from the Arabian Sea).
The roster of free films under the stars unfolds throughout the week with a complete mix of genres including the classic 1964 spaghetti western film A Fistful of Dollars with legendary Clint Eastwood; the beautifully shot Otto Bell’s Eagle Huntress; and closing DIFF’s beach screenings on December 14th is the romantic science fiction adventure drama The Space Between Us starring Asa Butterfield and Gary Oldman telling the story of a boy born on Mars who yearns to travel to Earth. Find out if he makes it by heading to THE BEACH at JBR.
