‘Lumière! Inventing Cinema’ presented by Thierry Frémaux
Celebrates the Birth of Movies

Dubai, 09 November 2016: The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) invites you to discover a selection of short films from the Lumière brothers, the pioneers of cinema who have made some of the world’s first and most famous films using the Cinematograph, an invention that changed forever the way we see the world.

‘Lumière! Inventing Cinema’ will be presented on Thursday, 8th December at 4pm in the Madinat Souk Theatre during DIFF’s 13th edition which runs from December 7-14, 2016 at Madinat Jumeriah, the home of DIFF, and promised to be an unmissable journey celebrating over 120 years of cinema.

This outstanding exhibition, a compilation of 98 conserved and restored films in 4k which Louis Lumière and his brother, Auguste made between 1895 and 1905, will be presented by Thierry Frémaux, the General Director of the Cannes Film Festival and the Institut Lumière in Lyon and one of the international film community’s most distinguished figures.

In 1895, the Lumière Brothers invented the Cinematograph (a device for capturing, developing and projecting films) and went on to film some of the first moving images in the history of cinema. Their staging of a scene, their use of travelling shots and special effects all reveal the art of film making. The compilation consists of almost 100 short films ranging from world-famous masterpieces to less well-known gems, all fully restored in 4K in honour of the Lumière Brothers’ bequest to Mankind: Unforgettable images and a glimpse of France and the world in the early 20th century.

Abdulhamid Juma, DIFF Chairman commented: “We are thrilled to welcome Thierry Frémaux to present to film fans in the UAE a spectacular exhibition dedicated to the pioneers of cinema Louis and Auguste Lumière. The exhibition offers festival goers an opportunity to experience the brilliance of the brothers and bring us face to face with the past and presenting us with an enlightening portrait of the birth of cinema.”

Thierry Frémaux, Managing Director of France’s Institut Lumière and Cannes Film Festival explained: “I’m very excited about bringing the Lumière! to the Dubai International Film Festival this December and presenting audiences with some of cinema's foundational moments through incredible restored prints of the work of the Lumière Brothers. The showcase enables us to rediscover and celebrates Auguste and Louis Lumiére a pair of filmmakers who are responsible for film as we know it, who’s pioneering moving image snapshots of life at the end of the 19th century paved the way for the popularization of the medium and its evolution into an art form.”
