Synopsis

In 1942, as China and Japan were at war, Henan province was devastated by one of the most tragic famines in modern Chinese history, resulting in the deaths of three million people. The disaster was exacerbated by locusts, natural disasters, disease and corruption. Feng Xiaogang's sweeping epic takes an incisive look at this traumatic period in Chinese history detailing tales of sadness and great bravery.
