THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY
The Cinema of the World
Synopsis
Struck down by a devastating stroke, the very successful French fashion editor Jean-Dominique Bauby finds himself completely paralysed and only able to communicate with a blink of his left eyelid. His extraordinary and best-selling memoir has been turned into an equally remarkable and moving film by the American artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel. With an astonishing performance by the charming Mathieu Amalric at its heart - acting often only with his face and an eyelid - the film combines Bauby's subjective vision and thoughts, as he painstakingly creates his memoir, with flashbacks to his previous fashionable life surrounded by family, friends and beautiful women.
