For centuries the inhabitants of a small Sicilian island have been fisherman and the sea has instilled in them a basic morality of the equality of everyone at sea and on land. But some of them have just woken up to the reality of the untapped economic benefits of tourism and the lure of commerce begins to corrupt their age old values. But the new world also brings the challenge of illegal aliens from Africa which a new Italian law forbids seafarers and landlubbers alike to aid - in stark contrast to the seafarer’s long unwritten code. In these times two families find themselves faced with events that will change their lives forever.
