Synopsis

Until 1965, prisoners at the notorious Robben Island prison in South Africa who wanted to play football, had to furtively kick about makeshift balls of string and paper in their cells. Finally relenting in 1965, prison authorities allowed the men to set up their own football club, which was promptly dubbed Makana FA. While the prison's best-known inmate at the time, Nelson Mandela was apparently barred from joining in, the founding members of Makana FA cherished their hard-won privilege. In 'More Than Just A Game', we catch up with some of these original members of Makana FA and hear from them how the sport provided much-needed respite from the daily prison grind, instilling men with a team spirit and sense of self-respect.
