TWO CITIES AND A PRISON
Muhr Arabic Documentary
Synopsis
In 2008, an interactive theatre group presented two performances, in two cities in Syria: Quameshly and Hassakeh. Whilst touring the cities, the group dealt with taboo issues and controversial subject matter, such as gender equality, stimulating discussion and debate amongst audiences. At the end of their tour, and in the second half of this fascinating documentary, they visited a jail for young offenders where they encouraged prisoners to recount their stories about incarceration into a play. The film shows the prisoners discussing the ways in which jail has transformed them, and how working through a dramatic production has created a framework for them to express these feelings.
