Synopsis

The ever-anxious Padma (Srividya) and her two lovely daughters live, cosseted, in a feudal mansion. Padma yearns to see her girls well settled in marriage. The elder (Tabu) is profound in her insights yet slighted by luck. The younger (Aishwarya Rai) is effervescent and passionate. Enter three men: one enigmatic but focused (Ajith); the second (Abbas) flamboyant and unpredictable; and the third (Mammooty), haunted by memories of a bitter war. When the father of the family dies, he leaves his inheritance to Padma's brother, whose wife taunts the widow and her daughter merciessly. They leave, setting out for the city of Chennai, eking out a living and living in bare, miserable lodging. But not for long.. based on Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Kandukondain revels in its fine ensemble cast that represents the dream of Hindi and South Indian acting talent.
