Synopsis

Two rivals, Lok (Simon Lam) and Mr. D (Tony Leung Ka Fai), are vying to take over a Triad gang. Tension builds in the race to capture the Dragon's Head Baton, a crucial symbol of leadership. Lok is highly respected by his elders, but Mr. D will do whatever it takes to defeat him, using bribery and violence that threaten to tear the gang apart. Director Johnny To, a master of the Hong Kong gangster film who has reinvigorated the genre on several occasions, eschews gunfights and builds tension by less conventional means. Selected for the Competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Election takes us far beyond formulaic shootouts, exploring the conflict between traditional codes of brotherhood and the cut-throat ways of the twenty-first century.
