Synopsis

The difficulty inherent in all personal, national and international communication sets the stage for this searing modern rendition of the biblical fable of The Tower of Babel. Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga explosively demonstrate how human lives are interwoven, and how our actions can have a devastating impact on people thousands of miles away. A thoughtless act in Morocco ricochets to the US, Mexico and finallytoJapan, where the story actually began.American couple Susan(Cate Blanchett)and Richard (Brad Pitt) are in Morocco struggling to maintain their deteriorating relationship. A shocking incident creates an international frenzy that affects their two children, their Mexican nanny Amelia (Adrianna Barraza), her nephew, Santiago (Gael Garcia Bernal), and ultimately a widowed Japanese businessman (Kôji Yakusho), who lives with his deaf-mute daughter, Chieko (Rinko Kikuchi) in Tokyo. The film contains brief scenes of nudity.
