Ahead of the annual DIFF Careers Fair on Thursday, September 12th at the Meydan IMAX Theatre we caught up with Georgina Shorter, Supervisor for the Dubai Film Market Forum, who has been working at the festival for three years on a temporary basis and returns to DIFF this year.
What’s your role at DIFF?
I collaborate with the head of the Dubai Film Market, Jane Williams. We focus on the industry part of the festival, putting together a forum for the delegates and others who have been accredited, basically anyone involved in the film industry - directors, producers etc. We create various sessions that run parallel with the festival itself, such as ‘How To Market Your Film’ and ‘How To Find Distribution’, and organise networking sessions for the Arab film industry. We try to tailor it each year with the festival programme.
This is your third year at the festival, what have been the highlights for you so far?
Last year was a great year for Haifa Mansour’s Wadjda and really nice for us to showcase women and film, highlighting the struggling of female directors in the region. I always love the mix of international and regional filmmakers that come together in the space. It’s a really lovely mix and I think a lot of interesting things come out of it.
This is the 10th anniversary of DIFF, is there anything you’re particularly looking forward to?
I’m really just looking forward to seeing some really great films. I know there’s a lot of very interesting stuff coming from the region that’s going to be showcased. But in the past I’ve not been able to see what I want as I’ve always been on call. This year, I would just love to be able to see some more films!
All Career Fair applicants must be over 21 years of age, UAE nationals or residents of the UAE and can register online by completing the Festival job application which can be found on the DIFF website
