The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) is a unique venue within Dubai’s historic Bastakiya District. For the third consecutive year, the SMCCU welcomes DIFF guests to partake in its numerous cultural activities.
The centre was established when His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, saw the need to reach out and educate expatriates about the traditions and customs of the United Arab Emirates. The traditional wind-tower house, located in picturesque Bastakiya has been its home since 1998. The centre’s mission is embodied in its motto, ‘Open Doors. Open Minds’; when its doors are opened, guests are asked to open their minds to the culture and traditions of the Emirati people.
Through various cultural activities, such as mosque tours, cultural walks through Bastakiya and authentic Emirati cultural breakfasts and lunches, the SMCCU aims to build bridges of understanding between the various nationalities living and working in and visiting the UAE. Visitors can expect a fun, relaxed atmosphere where all questions are answered. The centre’s local hosts are keen to make it a memorable experience, enhanced by Emirati hospitality and humour.
On December 9, as part of the Dubai International Film Festival’s Salam Cultural Bridge Day celebrations, the SMCCU invites festival guests to a traditional cultural lunch in Bastakiya followed by a Heritage Tour.
The activity starts at 14:00 and is complimentary. Limited spots available. RSVP essential. Please contact the DIFF Visitor Services Desk for more information.
