Dubai Film Market provides forum for docs talk

Dec 15,2010 - 11:56 AM

How do local documentary-makers perceive the challenges and limitations of the genre? Why are politically-themed documentaries pre-eminent in Arab film – and to what extent are these choices of subject dictated by trends in foreign markets?

With many Arab filmmakers working in the documentary genre to portray their experiences, stories, and observations, it is inevitable that institutions across the region are supporting the medium financially and in-kind.

As part of the Dubai Film Market’s ongoing series of panel discussions and forums, these and many further related issues will be comprehensively explored at ‘Documentary And Politics’ scheduled for a panel consisting of Rasmus Abrahamsen (Koncern Film), Lina Gopaul (producer, Smoking Dog Films), Michel Khleife (director, Palestine), John Akomfrah (director, Smoking Dogs Films) and as guest of honour, Souleymane Cisse (director from Mali and DIFF Lifetime Achievement Award honoree). These eminent guests will be debating the complex relationship between documentary filmmaking and politics, bringing their diverse experiences and expert perspectives to the issue.

The event is scheduled to begin at 14:30 in the Film Forum Room at the DIFF Headquarters and is open to all. The discussion will take in a broad spectrum of angles, starting from the theory that documentaries originating from countries in conflict tend to veer towards plight and political commentary.

As a key theme running throughout the dynamic week-long programme of panel discussions and workshops, there is more documentary debate on Thursday with ‘How to Advance the Documentary in the Arab World’. Featuring a distinguished line-up of speakers from across the Middle East and Europe, the discussion will centre on the opportunities offered by the funds and the role of television in encouraging documentary filmmakers.

Appearing will be Director of Screen Institute Beirut’s The Film Fund, Paul Baboujian, Tine Fischer of CPH:DOX International Film Festival, Souad Houssein of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, Mohamed Belhaj of Al Jazeera Documentary, Xavier Carniaux of Amip Multimedia and moderator Howard Feinstein of the Sarajevo Film Festival. The workshop takes place on , on Thursday December 16 at 16:30 in the Film Forum Room at the DIFF Headquarters.
